Contracting

Baffinland’s Contracting and Procurement processes include planning, implementing, and monitoring the provisions of the IIBA, to maximize benefits and opportunities for Inuit and Inuit firms at the Mary River Project.

Baffinland is committed to working with Inuit. In accordance with the IIBA with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), any Inuit firm with 100% Inuit ownership can apply to Baffinland to become designated as a Preferred Inuit Firm (PIF) and gain early access to certain contracting opportunities valued up to $3M at the Mary River Project.

Here is a list of the criteria Inuit firms must satisfy to be designated as a PIF:

  1. Registered with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated
  2. Located and operating within the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut
  3. 100% owned and operated by Inuit (not a joint venture with a larger organization)
  4. Ability to demonstrate a Community presence

Bid Simulation Workshop / How the Bid Process works

A Bid Simulation Workshop was held March 1st, 2023 in Iqaluit, to help Inuit firms learn about business opportunities with Baffinland as well as our contracting provisions, policies and processes. A detailed, step-by-step presentation on how to pre-qualify and become a PIF and get early access to contract opportunities can be downloaded here:

Baffinland conducts a yearly survey of all Inuit firms registered with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated. This survey has been jointly developed by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association and Baffinland Iron Mines. The purpose is three-fold:

  1. Collect reference data from Inuit firms
  2. Allow Inuit firms to submit pre-qualification information to Baffinland, to qualify for future contracting opportunities.
  3. Gather information on Inuit firm assistance needs.

While the survey is voluntary, we recommend that Inuit firms complete and return all sections of the survey, should they wish to pre-qualify with Baffinland for future contracting opportunities. All responses remain confidential, however the information provided may be used by Baffinland and QIA publicly. The name of any organization will not be referenced in any public documentation.

The Prequalification process is an open process and an Inuit firm can prequalify at any time. Support is available for Inuit firms that may require it. Qualified firms are notified, and added to the Baffinland Contracting Database for future consideration in the category or categories for which they have prequalified. The completed form should be emailed to procurement@baffinland.com .
