Baffinland supports Igloolik’s Ataguttaaluk Elementary School food program

As part of Baffinland’s commitment to supporting education and healthy living in Nunavut, the company donated more than $65,000 last year to help the Ataguttaaluk Elementary School in Igloolik run a school food program. The daily meals provide the school’s Kindergarten to Grade 7 students with healthy choices, as well as allowing some of them to learn new skills. In total, roughly 40,000 meals were served to students, until the COVD-19 pandemic interrupted the 2019-20 school year, according to Len March, Vice-Principal of Ataguttaaluk Elementary School.

Ataguttaaluk Elementary School students began each day with a nutritious breakfast that could include cereal with milk, yogurt, cheese, fresh fruits and meats. In the afternoon, students were served granola bars, fresh vegetables, crackers and juice, with soup offered twice weekly.

Country foods were also part of the school food program when they were available from the local Hunters and Trappers Organization. Delicious servings of char, caribou and narwhal were very much appreciated by students. Funds have also gone toward the purchase of reusable cups, bowls, and plates, as well as toasters and blenders to support the program.

Members of the school’s staff volunteered to offer an after-school food preparation class for older students. This extracurricular activity gave students the opportunity to learn about nutrition, cooking and food sanitation. Students worked with teachers and school administration to prepare and distribute the meals, as well as clean up afterwards. 

For years, Baffinland has supported young Nunavummiut. The company has funded lunch programs in other Nunavut schools, including Pond Inlet’s Nassivik High School. Baffinland has also purchased laptops for high school graduates and provided scholarships for students pursuing post-secondary education, as part of our ongoing commitment to creating prosperity and opportunities for Nunavummiut.
