Baffinland Apprentice Adamee Atsiqtaq featured in Nunavut Mining News

Baffinland employee and apprentice electrician, Adamee Atsiqtaq, is enjoying some newfound fame after being featured in the Nunavut Mining News Issue of May 9, 2022. Adamee, a former cook, has been with Baffinland for over three years now, and is currently in the second year of his electrician apprenticeship.

Adamee joined Baffinland in March 2019 after he attended a Work-Ready training presentation in Clyde River. He took entry-level training courses at the Mary River site, saying afterwards, “I should have done this 20 years ago!” He says safety is paramount for all mine workers at Baffinland, but especially for electricians who are at risk of arc flashes. Electricians are required to wear special shoes which keep them grounded in case of any shocks. Adamee was supposed to get his electrician certification 17 months ago, but was delayed by the COVID 19-pandemic. Although his work and training were on hold, he continued studying and learning about mining during this time at home.

In his downtime at the mine site, Adamee is quite fond of his TV programs – right now, he is engrossed in the Drama series ‘Vikings’, which he says he has watched more than a few times already. Another aspect of being on site he really enjoys are the meals, he says particularly, he looks forward to the country kitchen. It’s a time, he says, where employees are able to cook and share fish and meat they bring from home.

As a father to two children in their 20s and another who is 12 years old, Adamee encourages others, specifically young people, to consider a career in the mining industry with Baffinland. “It is a good place to work, to start training.” he says.

Baffinland’s Apprenticeship program is a workplace-based post-secondary education program initiated with Nunavut Arctic College and the QIA. Apprenticeship areas can include: carpentry, electricians, heavy duty mechanics, heavy equipment technicians, housing maintainers, millwrights, plumbers, and welders.

Once hired, all apprentices go through a four-month pre-trades program at Site that includes essential skills training, job shadowing, and pre-qualifier training to prepare them to take the apprenticeship entrance examination. Once complete, the apprentices begin their four-year apprenticeship.
