BAFFINLAND TO MONITOR AND PROTECT WHALES IN INNOVATIVE NEW CARBON CAPTURE PROJECT.
Baffinland is excited to participate in an innovative new pilot project, to monitor and protect Arctic whales, and mitigate the effects of climate change at the same time. Did you know that whales play a key role in the ocean’s capacity to capture massive amounts of carbon? Yet no system exists to measure and value that carbon, or its role in reducing greenhouse gases.
In keeping with our core value of Environmental Stewardship, Baffinland is partnering with Whale Seeker, a Canadian company that uses aerial surveillance, satellite technology and ethical AI to monitor whales, with the goal of creating a market-ready whale carbon credit system. The project’s tracking technology will also help all marine actors take meaningful action to avoid doing harm.
“For centuries people have used the latest technologies to hunt down and kill whales,” says Ed Goodall, from project board member WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation. “It is a measure of just how far we have come from those dark days that we are now using the latest technology to hunt down and save them.”
WDC recommends that vessels in known whale zones reduce their speeds to a maximum of 10 kn. Baffinland already goes beyond those best practices, requiring our vessels to reduce speeds to 9 kn in whale habitats. We also actively monitor no-go zones, using an alert notification system.
The Whale Carbon Plus Project (WCPP) brings together key ocean stakeholders from conservation, science, technology and business, to unlock this nature-based solution to the climate crisis. Baffinland is proud to be an “incredible project collaborator” as part of this solution.
