Celebrating International Women’s Day – Meena Oyukuluk
March 8, 2017
At Baffinland, we have some of the most experienced and inspirational women in the mining industry. For International Women’s Day, we asked some of them to share their experiences about what it’s like working in the industry, and their advice for young professionals and women interested in a job in the mining industry. We will be sharing their stories in the coming weeks.
Meena Oyukuluk, Baffinland Community Liaison Officer for Arctic Bay
Meena Oyukuluk is our Baffinland Community Liaison Officer for Arctic Bay. She serves as our representative to the community of Arctic Bay, answering questions from the community, organizing flights to site for our employees from Arctic Bay, and working to identify training opportunities.
Before joining Baffinland in 2014, Meena Oyukuluk worked for a school in her hometown of Arctic Bay. Prior to that, she worked for the housing association for 19 years. When the Mary River project picked up, Meena was quick to join, looking for a new opportunity with new challenges.
Through her years of professional experience, both with Baffinland and prior, Meena has learned how to overcome the potential challenges of being a woman in male-dominated professions. She relies on her past experiences to get her through situations that might otherwise have proved difficult.
In everything she does, she focuses on the same fundamentals to get her through every situation: “Treat everyone equal. Never be afraid or intimidated to ask for help and assistance. Be open with people and talk to people calmly, focusing on the situation… and always be confident!”
