Celebrating International Women’s Day – Mary Hatherly

April 18, 2017

At Baffinland, we have some of the most experienced and inspirational women in the mining industry. For International Women’s Day, we asked some of them to share their experiences about what it’s like working in the industry, and their advice for young professionals and women interested in a job in the mining industry. We will continue to share their stories in the coming weeks.

Mary Hatherly, Director of Inuit, Government, and Stakeholder Relations

Mary Hatherly was a law professor for seven years. She also held roles in Government as a Policy Advisor and has played a key role in the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. Overall, Mary has over 25 years of experience in Indigenous relations. Her last role prior to joining Baffinland as our Director of Inuit, Government, and Stakeholder Relations saw her leading and managing Aboriginal Relations for Hydro Power.

In Mary’s considerable experience as a woman in the mining industry, she has learned that many times, the demands are greater on females. She points the importance of sponsorships and mentorship as keys to removing roadblocks to development, and recommends that all women be willing to do the work to get ahead and are assertive and confident.
