Baffinland featured on ArcelorMittal Canada’s new website
July 27, 2017
ArcelorMittal, one of Baffinland’s parent companies and the largest steel producer in the world, recently launched their ArcelorMittal Canada website. Baffinland is prominently featured on the website as an important facet of ArcelorMittal’s Canadian operations.
Baffinland was also heavily featured in ArcelorMittal Canada’s 2016 Sustainability Report. The report included three Baffinland case studies.
The first looked at Baffinland’s Bruce Head monitoring program, an environmental monitoring program to investigate the potential effects of the Mary River mine’s shipping operations on the narwhal population in North Baffin. As part of the program, we involve and train residents from nearby Pond Inlet to act as observers and provide invaluable Qaujimajatuqangit (Inuit traditional knowledge).
The second case study examined our 2016 survey program in the North Baffin communities. Baffinland conducted a community survey in the five North Baffin communities potentially most-impacted by the Mary River mine and offered a way for residents of the communities to offer their feedback related to the operation.
The third case study looked at the 2016 Norwegian Institute of International Affairs survey on indigenous rights and policies of oil and gas and mining companies operating in the Arctic. The study ranked the public commitments, formalized procedures, and institutional arrangements of 92 resource extraction companies against 20 criteria related to indigenous rights. Baffinland was listed seventh on the survey, a testament to our ongoing commitment to working with the North Baffin communities.
